Our Process

How We Get
It Done

Foundation excavation and site work for new construction
01

Site Review & Layout

We review your engineering plans, walk the site, and identify potential soil, ledge, and groundwater conditions before excavation begins — so there are no surprises once the machine is running.

Residential foundation excavation with heavy equipment
02

Excavation to Design Depth

We excavate the foundation to the dimensions specified by your engineer, carefully managing any ledge or boulder conditions encountered and maintaining the excavation walls to OSHA trench safety standards throughout.

Foundation dig for a new home build
03

Footing Trench & Foundation Drainage

After the main excavation, we dig footing trenches to the required depth below frost line, and install perforated pipe and stone foundation drainage around the perimeter before backfill.

04

Backfill & Rough Grading

After the foundation is poured and waterproofed, we backfill in properly compacted lifts, rough grade the site, and leave it ready for the next phase of your construction project.

Why Our Foundation Excavation Stands Out

Foundation excavation in Norfolk County is not the same as foundation excavation in most of the country. The region's glacial geology — dense till loaded with boulders ranging from football-sized to several tons, with bedrock ledge that can appear anywhere from inches to dozens of feet below grade — makes every foundation dig a project that demands experienced operators and the right equipment. Massachusetts's 48-inch frost line depth drives the foundation requirements that define New England construction. Footings must extend below this depth to prevent frost heave from undermining the structure. In practice, full basements — typically 7 to 10 feet deep — are the standard residential foundation type in this region, because if you're going that deep anyway to get below the frost line, a full basement adds usable space at relatively modest additional cost. We excavate full basements, crawlspace foundations, and garage or outbuilding slabs with frost-protected perimeter footings. When ledge (bedrock) is encountered during excavation, the project requires a careful assessment of its extent and depth. Ledge that can be worked around is sometimes accommodated in the design; ledge that falls within the required excavation footprint must be removed. Hydraulic breaking (jackhammering) handles most ledge removal; extremely hard or extensive formations may require the services of a licensed blasting contractor. We identify ledge conditions as early as possible and keep your engineer and builder informed so the project can adapt without losing more time than necessary. Groundwater is another factor that must be managed during foundation excavation. Seasonal high water tables in parts of Norfolk County — and the saturated spring ground conditions that follow snowmelt — can require dewatering during the dig. We plan for these conditions and manage them so that the foundation can be formed, inspected, and poured on schedule. After the pour and waterproofing, we handle backfill in properly compacted lifts, install foundation drainage (perforated pipe and stone around the footing), and rough-grade the site ready for the next phase of construction.

01

Frost-Line Expertise

Massachusetts's 48-inch frost line is non-negotiable. Every footing we dig goes below it — protecting the structure from the heave and settlement that improperly founded buildings in New England routinely suffer.

02

Ledge & Boulder Capability

Norfolk County's glacial terrain means ledge and boulders are a routine part of foundation work — not an emergency. We have the equipment and operators to handle these conditions efficiently.

03

Excavation to Engineer Specs

We dig to the dimensions your engineer specifies — not approximations. Proper foundation dimensions are critical to structural integrity, and we take that seriously.

04

Complete Foundation Package

From initial dig through backfill, drainage installation, and rough grading, we handle the full excavation scope so your builder can focus on what comes next.

FAQ

Common Questions About Foundation Excavation

Massachusetts's frost line depth is 48 inches (4 feet). All footings must extend below this depth to prevent frost heave from damaging the structure. Full basements are typically 7–10 feet deep, which puts the footing well below the frost line. For slab-on-grade construction, frost-protected shallow foundations (FPSF) using perimeter insulation can allow shallower footings, but these are more common for garages and outbuildings than primary residences.

Ledge is bedrock — the solid rock formation below the surface soil. Norfolk County sits over granite and other hard bedrock formations that can appear anywhere from a few inches to many feet below grade. When we encounter ledge within the required excavation footprint, we assess its extent with your engineer. Ledge is typically removed by hydraulic breaking (jackhammering) at $50–$200+ per cubic yard, or by blasting if the formation is too extensive or hard for mechanical breaking. We flag ledge conditions as early as possible to manage cost and schedule expectations.

Massachusetts 520 CMR 14.00 and OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P govern trench and excavation safety. Excavations deeper than 5 feet require protective systems — sloping, shoring, or trench boxes depending on soil conditions. Ladders must be within 25 feet of all workers in excavations deeper than 4 feet. We comply with all state and federal excavation safety requirements on every project.

Yes. Foundation perimeter drainage — perforated pipe set in stone around the footing, connected to a sump or daylight outlet — is a standard part of our foundation package. This drainage system is critical for keeping basements dry and protecting the foundation wall from hydrostatic pressure.

Seasonal high water tables are a reality in parts of Norfolk County, especially during spring. When groundwater is encountered, we deploy dewatering equipment — sump pumps and well points — to lower the water level in the excavation so work can continue and the foundation can be properly formed and poured.

Always. Massachusetts law requires a Dig Safe (811) call at least 72 hours before any excavation. We complete this process on every project — locating and marking underground utilities before any machine touches the ground.
