Tell us about your project — we'll get back to you fast.

We review your engineering plans, walk the site, and identify potential soil, ledge, and groundwater conditions before excavation begins — so there are no surprises once the machine is running.

We excavate the foundation to the dimensions specified by your engineer, carefully managing any ledge or boulder conditions encountered and maintaining the excavation walls to OSHA trench safety standards throughout.

After the main excavation, we dig footing trenches to the required depth below frost line, and install perforated pipe and stone foundation drainage around the perimeter before backfill.

After the foundation is poured and waterproofed, we backfill in properly compacted lifts, rough grade the site, and leave it ready for the next phase of your construction project.

Massachusetts's frost line depth is 48 inches (4 feet). All footings must extend below this depth to prevent frost heave from damaging the structure. Full basements are typically 7–10 feet deep, which puts the footing well below the frost line. For slab-on-grade construction, frost-protected shallow foundations (FPSF) using perimeter insulation can allow shallower footings, but these are more common for garages and outbuildings than primary residences.
Ledge is bedrock — the solid rock formation below the surface soil. Norfolk County sits over granite and other hard bedrock formations that can appear anywhere from a few inches to many feet below grade. When we encounter ledge within the required excavation footprint, we assess its extent with your engineer. Ledge is typically removed by hydraulic breaking (jackhammering) at $50–$200+ per cubic yard, or by blasting if the formation is too extensive or hard for mechanical breaking. We flag ledge conditions as early as possible to manage cost and schedule expectations.
Massachusetts 520 CMR 14.00 and OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P govern trench and excavation safety. Excavations deeper than 5 feet require protective systems — sloping, shoring, or trench boxes depending on soil conditions. Ladders must be within 25 feet of all workers in excavations deeper than 4 feet. We comply with all state and federal excavation safety requirements on every project.
Yes. Foundation perimeter drainage — perforated pipe set in stone around the footing, connected to a sump or daylight outlet — is a standard part of our foundation package. This drainage system is critical for keeping basements dry and protecting the foundation wall from hydrostatic pressure.
Seasonal high water tables are a reality in parts of Norfolk County, especially during spring. When groundwater is encountered, we deploy dewatering equipment — sump pumps and well points — to lower the water level in the excavation so work can continue and the foundation can be properly formed and poured.
Always. Massachusetts law requires a Dig Safe (811) call at least 72 hours before any excavation. We complete this process on every project — locating and marking underground utilities before any machine touches the ground.
